Ascent of Canisp

Canisp rises abruptly from the farmland of north west Scotland. This makes it one of the great looking hills in the area. It is the steepness of the hill as seen from the north east that gives it the amazing view, although still magnificent from the A837. However, as driving along this road the south east slopes do look less steep and it is via this route that the ascent is made.

A parking space is marked on the 1:25000 map on the side of the road. Just opposite there is a footpath that leads onto the hill. Ample parking.

From the road, follow the path for 200m until a footbridge over the outfall of Lock Awe is reached. Cross the river by this bridge. From here the route is effectivly straight up. Follow the ground to Loch an Gruagaich. Make a straight path to the summit, but if the Allt Mhic Mhurchaidh Gheir is un-crossible follow up the north east bank to below Meall Diamhain. From here the hill becomes stoney with lovely white stones over the hillside. Follow the slopes to the summit.(6kms. 700m. 3hrs. 10min.)

The descent is by the uphill route. Given clear westher, you can see right down to the road as the hillside stretches out before the walker. Remember to cross the rivers at the bottom in plenty of time to ensure both safety and dry feet.(6kms. 0m. 1hrs. 50min.)
